Trans Am has been at the forefront
of experimental electronic rock for over a decade.
They have released at least nine critically-heralded
full length albums and toured relentlessly since
1995. Originally based in Washington, DC Trans
Am exploded around the world in 2003. Currently,
they are provisionally based in London, San Francisco
and Portland, Oregon.
Their most recent album, Sex Change,
was recorded in June 2006 at the end of #3 band
member Nathan Means’ two and a half year
residence in New Zealand. During the initial Sex
Change sessions at Auckland’s legendary
MAINZ studios, the band distilled their artistic
philosophy and cumulated knowledge into a 70-point
code called Obscene Strategies. Although originally
intended to be erased, below are some sample strategies:
#3 Get experimental! Start by drawing
cartoons of cocks on the bathroom wall.
#4 At a moment of creative impasse, pick a fight.
#9 Check your email.
#10 Constantly request that your instrument be
made louder.
#11Take a nap.
#12 Idea: Rip off black musicians.
#16 Do everything you can to make it sound like
Jackson Browne.
#20 Check your email again.
#23 Leave the studio unlocked and all the doors
open for a few days – see what happens.
#39 Talk loudly into your mobile in the control
room during mixing.
#48 It’s good enough. Or if not, you’ll
get used to it.
#56 As the session drags along, start stealing
mics and rack equipment from the studio.
#63 Pillow fight!
#64 Better play it safe.
#67 For the remainder of the session, stare at
everyone’s crotch.
