Back in the summer of 1996 the
sound platform was born for a one off show not
to resurface till 1999. Where did those three
years go? Darren Smallman (ex-warped, toad &
thee vinyl creatures) decided to leave the edgy
expanse of Geelong & see the world. Armed
with a guitar & a beer he wandered throughout
Europe until he landed back in Melbourne.
After spending three years writing
for the band that wasn’t he got together
with old vinyl creatures friends Karl Inderberg
& Simon Baird and started recording. Over
the next few years & many line-ups they recorded
four EP’s (released on their own label low
transit industries) ranging from flat out pop
rock to the big lush pop opus. Even though each
record had it’s own unique sound they always
stayed true to what they love. Melody. And they
have an abundance of it.
Now venturing into 2004 the
sound platform have entered the studio again with
co-producer Nigel Derricks to record their first
long player “the sun & the silver anthology
| the red house of wives recordings”. Bringing
back all their trademarks of melody, experimental
orchestration & great songwriting. Darren
himself has just taken over the position of bass,
which has proven to be a huge asset. Now giving
the band a beefy rhythm section as well. Not to
mention a guest lead vocal by the lovely Ms. Sasha
Bell (the essex green, the finishing school &
the ladybug transistor)on their tune summer something.
"The
Sound Platform's gentle brand of pop boasts a
desperate beauty that sets it apart from the hollow,
formulaic repetition that is so often associated
with the genre. Somehow capable of creating a
distinctive sound without ever duplicating themselves,
The Sound Platform impress everytime"
